I think this thread has gone off-track and we should all reconsider before posting any further messages, whether technical or personal.

Agreed.

Nice Mando tat!  ;D I'm guessing that's the inside forearm, not the calf. I've thought about getting a rebel firebird in solid black like that. I have an old piece on my left shoulder I'd like to get covered up, might put it there.

General Discussion / MMO Player Wins Silver Medal at the Olympics
« on: March 06, 2010, 12:23:59 am »
I came across this during my regular web surfing, and thought you guys might find it interesting.

"It's not every day you run across an Olympic Medalist in your favourite MMO, much less gank them and take their stuff. For some EVE Online players, that opportunity may be closer than they think. With the conclusion of the recent Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, it came to light that one of the medal winners is not just an EVE player but also an avid PvP junkie. Casting off the stereotype of MMO gamers as unfit and demotivated, Kjetil Jansrud is a professional alpine skier at the peak of physical fitness. Competing in this year's Winter Olympics, the Norwegian EVE player took the silver medal in the Men's Giant Slalom event.

Kjetil Jansrud is better known to his friends in "hirr" corporation as "NThraller", the Caldari ECM specialist. As part of Morsus Mihi alliance, he takes part in roaming PvP gangs and full-scale territorial warfare. In conjunction with the news of NThraller's Olympic win, JumpOnContact has taken an interesting look at the demographics of EVE players and MMO gamers in general. According to CCP, the average age of EVE players is around 27 and most players have some kind of degree-level certificate. The EVE community is made up of everything from high-paid professionals to students but did you ever expect to see "Olympic Medalist" added to that list? I know I didn't."

(playing Tabula Rasa by himself, crying)

:)

Are you able to still play Tabula Rasa? If there's an emulator or some other free to play model out there, I'd love to have a go at it. I always thought TR was a cool game, I just didn't think it was worth the full MMO subscription price.

Eh, a lot of people get all misty-eyed about the pre-NGE days, but they don't remember how much stuff was bugged and flat-out broken back then.

You know its close when the pre-orders start... ;D

Oh yeah, that would be extremely close. We probably won't be there for another year or so ;D

Here is some new news on the game, as well as a good walk through of the game! Enjoy!

http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20090819_001

I watched that this morning for the first time, it's an excellent gameplay video that gives one a feel for what to expect in the game. One thing I noticed though, is that the imperial starship captain has the same face as the bounty hunter's mentor, he's just wearing a cap. Hoping this is just early development footage and things like that will get fleshed-out as things progress. As a long-time player of BioWare games, I'm still not 100% convinced they'll be able to translate their epic single-player RPGs into the MMO space, but if anyone can do it, it's them.

Sept 2010 would be great, that's just 1 year away. I've been guessing we were about 2 years from launch. I won't get my hopes up though, BioWare has a history of delaying launches until everything is up to standards. Dragon Age has been in development for 6 or 7 years now, IIRC, and they just delayed the launch of that one by a couple of months.

True, but you have to remember the austin studio was started in 2006 to deal with the demand of working on to many projects at once. That was 3 years ago, if you go and dig through all the press releases from Bioware you also have to look at Obsidian and why they were brought in to do KotOR 2. Bioware was qouted they were working on another game of the same Genre and didn't want the 2 products influnacing each other... It looks like the Old Republic could have been in development for far longer then we have even been told so far.

Yeah, I first reported on BioWare's "super-secret-as-yet-unannounced" MMO here on these forums several years ago, back on the old forums, before the great crash (tm), when speculation was flying that it might be an old republic-themed game, but no one was sure (probably one of the worst-kept secrets ever in the video game industry, because everyone who had played KotOR knew it couldn't be anything else).

Yeah, would be fun to get the old gang back together, or at least part of the old gang. But, meeting new folks and forming a new crew is also fun.

General Discussion / Re: Anyone attending PAX?
« on: August 22, 2009, 06:54:48 pm »
PAX is one of those events I've always wished I could get to, but have never had the opportunity. Have fun Kay. There's one newly announced game I'm particularly interested in, it's called Dust 514. It's a tie-in to EVE-Online being developed by CCP that has been secretly in development for the last 3 years. It was first announced at the GDC in Germany about a week ago. They had a gameplay trailer on display at GDC, but the copy I saw was made by a guy using his cell phone camera. If CCP is at PAX, and you can get a better copy of that trailer, or if there's any other info about the game available, then please hook me up  ;D

Flotsam and Jetsam / Re: Homebrew - Any tips?
« on: August 03, 2009, 03:23:20 pm »
And I thought cider was just fermented apple juice. I didn't realize the process of making it was that involved.

I have to wonder how earlier humans originally figured out the brewing process for beer, cider, and other things. How they figured out how to mix yeast, barley, hops, and a host of other ingredients to create a drinkable beverage. Their scientific knowledge was more limited back then. I wonder how many decades or centuries of trial and error it took to perfect the process.

Glad to hear the brown ale turned out well. :)

Good news about the law being changed, hehe.

That's good to know, about the desired ABV percentage. My memory might be fuzzy, but when I was in the UK I recall having a clear cider that was 10%. Maybe that wasn't true cider, but more like the cider equivalent of a wine cooler. My favorite beer of all time is a British ale I had called Castle Eden. It wasn't terribly strong, but it had a wonderful flavor and was easy to drink. I was never able to find it here in the states, even in stores that stock a lot of imports.

What about stout, you guys like stout? I know a lot of people don't like it, but personally I enjoy it as one pint kind of thing.

The over 8% part sounds good  ;D

Not sure about the yeasty part, though. I'm not even sure what yeast tastes like.

This week's update is a video documentary about the level of voice acting being used in the game. There's some great gameplay footage as well. http://www.swtor.com/media/trailers/video-documentary-3

I'd be interested in checking out DDO if it's free to play. I signed up for the beta, haven't gotten any word back yet.

Yep, like Tadik said, we are keeping an eye on SWTOR. Connor has expressed a keen interest in the game, and I believe we will be forming a company there.

I had a friend who did home brewing, years ago. He used to put the carboy containers in a closet because the brewing needed to happen in a dark place, but he was brewing beer, I don't know if cider has the same light sensitivity. He also used to wash the bottles in the bathtub, in a bleach solution before bottling. So, some extra closet and tub space are the only tips I can think of. And some kitchen space, he used to have to use the stove to do something to the hops, I think he was boiling them. This is all going from memories of about 20 years ago.

I looked into homebrewing a few months back, and found some websites that have starter kits and books for sale.

Hey Sahe, welcome back. :) Xera and I are still playing SWG, though we're on Starsider server now. Unfortunately, the pop on Wanderhome declined to the point where the game really wasn't enjoyable. The good news is Starsider is crowded. If you'd like to join us, they have free character transfers available until June 30th, and they just started another free account reactivation. It's either 14 days or 30 days, I can't remember which.

The smuggler looks pretty interesting, I wonder what the next class reveal will be. Maybe a sith class, since the last 2 have been republic. One thing I find curious is that there hasn't been any mention of a medic class yet.

I'd be willing to take on project officer for SWTOR, unless Freaden, Tadik, or someone else really interested in the game wants it, since I already have a job in the watch :)

The game is still in pre-alpha though, and about 1-2 years from release by most estimates, I think it's still too early to form an actual company. That's just my opinion, though.

The bounty hunter was especially cool, I thought. If the actual character in-game can do the things the BH did in the video, like using the jetpack to scale tall buildings, and flying around for extended periods blasting everything in sight, I'll most likely have a sith BH alt  8)
